BTT – Niche

There are certain types of books that I more or less assume all readers read. (Novels, for example.)
But then there are books that only YOU read. Instructional manuals for fly-fishing. How-to books for spinning yarn. How to cook the perfect souffle. Rebuilding car engines in three easy steps. Dog training for dummies. Rewiring your house without electrocuting yourself. Tips on how to build a NASCAR course in your backyard. Stuff like that.
What niche books do YOU read?

My niche doesn’t seem so unique in my social circle, but in the book blogging world, it doesn’t have much of a presence that I can see so far. I own, read, and constantly refer to books about gender, sexual orientation, alternative sexuality, and subcultures connected to all of these areas. Identifying as queer, Femme, and kinky, among other IDs, it only makes sense that books like Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold, The Leather Daddy and the Femme, and Stone Butch Blues are much loved selections from my library.

What’s your niche?

  1. Sex is always an interesting topic! Here are mine: (1) and (2)

  2. I happily read cover to cover and “for dummies” book that could be classified “Social Studies”. History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Religion…can’t get enough. I read other books in the genres as well of course, but the “for dummies” books are so readable and I find that I actually retain the information easier from them.

Jacqueline, I couldn’t agree more ;) And fashion is something I find fascinating, but it’s a hot-button topic for me; I have a lot of qualms with the skew of the fashion industry towards the smaller end of the straight size spectrum, and the way people in the business view plus sized people, even when they’re not technically plus sized.

Bib, I should try one of those “for dummies” books – I’m STILL not sure how I managed an A in my history class, since I was only “pretty sure” my final essay didn’t have any completely incorrect content.

SF, welcome! You’ve no idea how good it is to hear that from a fellow blogger; I was feeling a bit like a villain ;) I’m off for the day, but I’ve subscribed to your blog and intend to come by with some thoughts on your Femme privilege post soon!

Meh, my nonfiction niche books are pretty common ones: gardening and writing. Oh, and Eastern Orthodoxy . . . guess that one’s not so common.
