Aaaaaaand, here we go!

One of the benefits of the Great Library Update of 2014 is that I’ve discovered a few books that needed to move up the TBR stack just in time for Readathon. Combining that knowledge with past Readathon experience and knowledge of my own reading habits, I came up with this book stack:

readathon april 2014

Additionally, I have Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake and Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus on my Nook (the latter of which I’ve been more anxious to read since discovering Morgenstern’s beautiful, and unavailable, Tarot deck). I’m also listening to The Maze Runner by James Dashner, narrated by Mark Deakins.

So, I have a pretty large selection, a bit of diversity, but mostly books I think I’ll enjoy and find easy to read, because I really want to get through a ton of pages and donate a good sum to The Jimmy Fund for my Mamau.

ETA this year’s intro meme, since I actually scheduled this post for 8am – first time I’ve ever been THAT on the ball for Readathon!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Portland, Maine
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? That’s really hard to say, but The Fault in our Stars was my most recent acquisition; I’ve been meaning to pick that one up for over a year.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Ooh, another tough call! Probably the fresh mozzarella, grape tomatoes, basil, and assorted Italian deli meats I’ll throw together with a little fresh ground pepper, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I recently became the newest Assistant Librarian for LibraryThing for Libraries, and I could not be more thrilled about it. I adore my team, and love being “at work” (which, as often as not, means being at home with my colleagues on Skype and my cats curled up on either side of me and my laptop).
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I’m reading to raise funds for charity this time around, which is a real motivator! And I’m most looking forward to meeting new people – most of my Tweeps are from Readathon adds :)

Okay, back to reading – remember, every comment here is money toward the grand total, so if you’ve read this far, don’t leave without at least saying HI – help me give my money away for a good cause!

Oh hey. Enjoy your meat and cheese snack today!

  2. Derek says:

You know how to make reading cozy! The cats here would keep me from seeing the page, Lulu in particular. She has an uncanny knack for knowing where my eyes are focused and being directly in that sight line, begging for attention.

    Good luck and have fun!

Xander has insisted that I create lap space between me and the breakfast table where I keep my laptop, but at the moment, they’re both eating (which keeps them outta my breakfast, always a bonus). Thanks, Derek!

  3. Congratulations on the new job! Working with LibraryThing has to be so much fun. I absolutely love your stack. Stargirl and Bel Canto are fantastic, so I can’t wait to see what you think. Hope you have a great day of reading. I’ll be popping in from #TeamHughes to cheer you on :)

    • Kirsten says:

Thanks, Shannon!!! I deliberately chose some reads I knew would probably be speedy, like Stargirl, and Bel Canto got bumped up the TBR while I was reading reviews on LT. Looks like Tanya agrees that it’s a winner; glad to know it’s a good slump-buster!

  4. Your list looks great, but your snacks look even better. You can cook for me any day. I read Bel Canto in just over one sitting, so it might be a good bet when you’re in a slump. Good luck!

    • Kirsten says:

Excellent to know, Tanya; I’m really looking forward to Bel Canto! I didn’t snack prep as much as I like to this time around, but meat and cheese and some sort of veggie is always a sound bet for me :)

  5. Sarah says:

My daughter made me read The Fault in our Stars & I’ll forever be glad, it’s awesome! I think a 24 hour Readathon rocks & you inspire me. truth.

    • Kirsten says:

I’m really enjoying it so far; I’d totally have swooned for Gus when I was 16! And thank you, Sarah, you are an inspiration as well, and I’m so glad to know you.

  6. Kait B Roe says:

I love that you have I Am The Cheese in your #TBR pile. One of my absolute favorite YA book that I actually read when I was a #YA. I’m so glad you’re doing this #readathon. I should join you next year. Good luck and I will always be there when you need to #fundraise in Mamau’s memory.

    • Kirsten says:

Kait, it’s one I’ve never read, but have meant to for ages! Thank you so, so much for your support, and yes, please do join! The next one will be mid-late October :)

  7. C.J. says:

Congratulations on your new job! You must be so thrilled. I’m also cheering you on from Team Hughes. You have a great stack of books. I also want to read TFIOS, but I was hesitant for the longest time because I thought it would be really sad. Do you think you will see the movie? I saw your also reading Coraline. I’m reading The Ocean At The End of the Lane right now and it’s my first time reading Neil Gaiman. Have fun!

    • Kirsten says:

Thanks for cheering, CJ! I’m in the very first sad moment of TFIOS, and I know this book is gonna wreck me, but in that beautiful way, you know? I still haven’t watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower because the book was just that way for me, beautifully tragically poignant, and I know I have to be in a certain mindframe for a movie like that, you know? Enjoy your Gaiman – I’ve not read that one, but I really enjoyed Neverwhere and Stardust!

  8. Nicole says:

Hi Kirsten. Good luck with your reading today. I loved Bel Canto and I hope you enjoy it as well. Team Hughes is here for you today! Hope you get lots of comments for your charity today.

  9. Kate says:

I figured it out! Enjoy your books and dont forget to take breaks to rest your eyes! I bet thats why u r listening to one too?!? Here’s to your Mamau!

    • Kirsten says:

Yay! Yep, I’ve got paper and Nook and audio books, plus I have the concert tonight, so there will be a good long break then. Hope the rain hasn’t foiled your plans for the day!

  10. Renald128 says:

I have read only two of the books in your stack, Coraline and The Fault in Our Stars. They are both beautiful!

    Have fun in your readathon!

  11. stacey says:

congrats on the super cool new job! And working from home with kitten bookends? bonus! Enjoy the read-a-thon homestretch!

    • Kirsten says:

Thanks so much! Not only that, but they bought me the fancy new laptop that’s making readathon posting and mobility WAY easier than in years past :) Happy cheering and reading!
