Readathon FAIL

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Epic failure on the readathon, guys. Huge. I spent half of the day setting timers for Joshua’s activities and the other half… I don’t even know. But, I only made it through about 150 pages of one book, and didn’t even pick the other up. Sigh.

At any rate, I’m getting a TON of reading done on my new job, as all I’m doing is scanning thousands of pages of medical records and then taking five minutes here and there to assign them to patients in the database. Not the most exciting work, but hey, I’m getting paid to read, pretty much – and blog! :)

Speaking of which, I’ve decided to start using my main page of Femme Flavor as a journal type of blog, so I’m not restricting myself to writing just about bookish things using FolioFiles or in snippets on Facebook and Twitter. I’d love if you’d join me there, as well (http://femmeflavor.com) and get caught up on what’s new in my universe. I’d love to hear updates from you, as well, so come on over! New post will be up shortly :)

And we’re LIVE!

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Today marks the launch of a new community all about audiobooks! I’m so excited to have become a part of the AudioFile Magazine staff at the perfect time to help get this off the ground, and I hope that you will join us, and then share the news far and wide – tweet it, link to it on Facebook, blog about it, stumble it, digg it, send up smoke signals, just do that thing you do! (there’s even a nifty little “ShareThis” button at the bottom of this post that makes it absurdly easy… *grin*)

Joining ABC is simple, and if you’re already a member of any Ning communities (I’m also on Book Blogs), your basic profile is already there and ready to go. Come see the list of stage events at BEA as shared by APA PR Manager Kaitlin Friedmann, tell us what releases you’re particularly excited about in the New and Upcoming Titles Group, and join us for our Sync YA summer listening program, which will feature two absolutely FREE titles every week from July to September!

I think this community is going to be an amazing way to bring together industry professionals and listeners, and I hope that wherever you fall on the spectrum, from narrator to publisher to occasional listener to avid audiobookaholic, you’ll come on by and help us make this a great place to discuss and learn about everything to do with the world of audiobooks. Hope to see you there!

Suing for the right to burn books

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

This came from my BookBlips daily radar; while it’s sometimes overwhelming in quantity, I’m grateful for the news and new blogs I find through the feed.

Christian group sues for the right to burn YA novel with homosexual protagonist

Clearly, this is more about raising a stink than actually seeking to censor the author; the only effect it has had on me is adding one more book to my wish list, and causing me to seethe with indignation at the gall of some individuals. Thankfully, the folks who support censorship never seem to learn that by deeming a book unfit for children (or adults, for that matter), they often only succeed in giving it huge media attention resulting in a sales spike for the offending work. Which is just fine by me.

New words in the OED

Monday, June 1st, 2009

This article lists fifteen words recently added to the Oxford English Dictionary, courtesy of the entertainment, business, and social networking worlds. It was really only a matter of time before “muggle” made it in there, but I’m pleasantly surprised by the addition of “grrl” and “lookism” – as well as their definitions. “Meatspace” always makes me laugh, and look! now it’s a real word! But “bouncebackability?” “Riffage?” I feel like entries like this will cause language, rather than fashion or music (um, hammer pants? Disco?) to be the snicker-worthy mark of our generation:  “They needed a word for THAT?”

What do you think of the list? What words do you see being added in the next couple of years?
